Sometimes an office environment makes health and wellness in the
workplace hard to maintain. I haven’t worked in an office in years,
but sometimes I do chair massage in a workplace and I see…

  • Morning coffee or diet coke to get some quick energy.
  • There’s that soda and snack machine in the breakroom that lures your
    quarters.
  • Sitting all day in a cubicle.
  • Going out for a fast food lunch.
  • Smoke breaks as an excuse to walk away from your desk for a while.
  • 3pm coffee break.
  • Stress of deadlines, gossip and fear of getting laid off.
  • Health and wellness in the workplace is often the last thing on
    people’s minds.

Gosh, sorry to bring up all of this negative stuff!

So, I want to offer some health and wellness in the workplace
suggestions.

Energy…

We all want it. Coffee tastes and smells great and serves as
a burst of energy, but when I was in that trap I would get a big
afternoon low. And I know I was quite dehydrated.

I have found my miracle juice, Ageless Xtra to be a wonderful alternative for a
sustained, cool and calm energy, plus it repairs my cells, so I feel
and look younger. It is full of antioxidants and tons of other
healthy things.

Snaking…

I don’t know about you, but when I’m bored, overwhelmed or have writer’s block  I
snack.

In an office setting, sometimes that snack machine is the
only alternative.

This is when preparing is necessary. It’s time to fill up those tacky
soft mini coolers with healthy snacks. It’s best to do this the night
before.

Health and Wellness in the Workplace Snack Options…

  • Organic baby carrots
  • Celery sticks with natural peanut butter
  • Almonds
  • That convenient Ageless Xtra juice
  • Natural crackers and goat cheese or natural peanut butter
  • Yogurt – the Greek strained kind has 20grams of protein for great energy
  • Fruit… Apples, organic bananas, grapes
  • If you’re brave… Boil some collard greens/Swiss chard the night before and bring it in Tupperware

Sitting…

Even when working at home I find I’m sitting more and more these days.

So, I’ve been sitting on a pilates ball.  Can you try
that?  It’s a great ab workout and helps you really sit up straight.

Also, if I drink a lot of water, it forces me to get up to
pee…how much water are you drinking?

Try and get up and walk the halls at least 1 time an hour, stretch,
touch your toes, get some blood flowing.

Take a tennis ball and squeeze it between your knees to exercise your
muscles.

Dance a little at your desk.

Find a walking partner and walk for half of your lunch break.

For stress….
Encourage your office to hire a massage therapist to come at least 1
time a month to give you all a chair massage. If your boss won’t pay,
each of you can chip in $15 and get 15 min massages. Since health and
wellness in the workplace is a buzzword for human resources these days
I bet they’d be on board.

Hopefully these health and wellness in the workplace ideas can help you out, and I’d love to hear your ideas, so leave a comment below and help our community stay healthy!

Thanks!

Sue, thanks for this post. I know Paul, my hubby, is suffering from stress and burn-out from work, he often comes home with a headache. I'll forward him your post!

    Hi Sue,

Thank you for these tips. I know I find it very difficult to take the time to get up and move around. With so much to do, I can literally sit at my desk all day. I need to be intentional about it.

I love your suggestion to sit on a pilates ball… I am going to go buy one and try it out now:) I agree it takes a little thought before hand to create a healthy environment in the work place. However, it is one of the most important things to do in my opinion. Thanks for a great post Sue!

I think that almonds are too hard and can break your teeth. Instead of peanut butter that is cooked, you can buy raw almond butter. It is soft and spreads like peanut butter, but it is raw. I know that Whole Foods and Trader Joes sells them and they have stores all over. Although I do not understand why they cannot have other raw butters.
