I found this really great article about the 10 weirdest spa treatments by Patrick Kiger.  It made me think that my massage practice may need a bit of spicing up!

5-weird-spa-treatments-1He writes, “how about a slithery snake massage or a pedicure from a school of hungry fish? Or perhaps a cactus needle massage, a facial with human placenta tissue, or a scrub with nightingale droppings? Snail slime moisturizer is said to be wonderfully rejuvenating, too. And if you crave full-body relaxation, maybe baking in a Korean oven sauna or taking a dip in a tub of Czech beer will do the trick.”

Be sure to get your passports up to date, because this is a world tour.

In Isreal you could visit Ada Barak’s carnivorous plant farm, which in addition to its fine selection of lizard and insect-eating flora, also offers therapeutic snake massages.

Head to Turkey to immerse your feet in tanks of water to allow tiny carp, known as “doctor fish,” to nibble away at your dead skin and provide a mini foot massage.

In Mexico’s spas they combine familiar beauty treatments with indigenous rituals, using local materials like cactus, volcanic ash, chocolate, vanilla and honey.

How about Asia?  A Singapore company called Maylande markets a facial treatment made from human placentas that it obtains in Japan. Its placenta-based products include a tonic, a soap, a facial mask and others, which it claims provide a range of benefits, from clear skin to brain stimulation.

You could go to Japan for some nightingale droppings. The birds’ poop, as it turns out, contains enzymes that are said to break down dead skin cells and guanine, which supposedly gives the complexion a warm glow.

In Chile you could get smoother hands.  Snail farmers, who were up to their elbows in snail goo each day, noticed that their hands were softer and smoother, and that small cuts healed more quickly without infection.

Go to an Austrian spa like Demi Moore where she had leeches applied to her body for detoxification measures.

Hop over to Korea to cook in a pine wood burning kiln sauna.

Of course in the Czech Republic we could enjoy the therapeutic beer bath at the Chodovar family brewery!

Or, you could come to Portland, Maine for a boring old massage!

What’s your weirdest spa treatment you’ve gotten…or would dare to get?  We’d love to hear from you, so leave your comment below!

As weird as those treatments may sound ,there is so much in this world of ours that still need to be discovered that I know these people are not any weirder than the scientist who made medicine with a horse’s urine. Hell , if sperms are good for wrinkles, bring along the treatment, ill use it.

I really enjoy the process of ear coning or ear candling. It is very relaxing and soothing. I really just wish people could understand the true facts about it. Most of the info people get is all common miss conception and untrue facts.

This is one of the things you won't get unless you are not only willing to travel, but willing to try something different. I was getting a haircut in Istanbul a few years ago and the barber pulled out a lighter to clear of the little hairs on my ear.
